Two 12-year-old best friends struggle with their relationship after a police stop and search. Set in Luton’s South Asian and Middle Eastern community, it’s a story of political and racial tension, loss and growing up. Written and directed by artist, musician and film-maker Imran Perretta and co-written by Enda Walsh (Hunger), Ish was shot in lustrous black and white by cinematographer Jermaine Canute Edwards (My Father’s Shadow). Layered on the coming-of-age story and investigation of young masculinity is a more sinister narrative; of racial profiling and facial recognition tech. Complex, bold and authentic. Part of Teenage Flicks. Supported by BFI FAN and National Lottery and part of Rip it Up, a UK-wide celebration of youth culture on screen.
