White Wall Cinema: Southland Tales

Dir: Richard Kelly
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott

The story, set in 2008, sees the United States standing on the brink of social, economic, and environmental disaster, in the midst of a Fourth of July heatwave weekend. Action movie star Boxer Santaros finds himself suffering from amnesia as his life intertwines with pornstar Krysta Now, who is developing her own reality TV show tackling the big subjects of terrorism, crime, poverty, and teen horniness. Added to this mix is LAPD officer Roland Taverner, whose identity seems to have been split in two.

A rip-roaring hybrid of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick sensibilities, with an almost hypnotic mix of grandeur, etherealness, and downright absurdist, Republican Party-fuelled phantasmagoria. Miss the Cannes Cut at your peril.
